Innovative medical procedure saves lives of stroke patients

A recently inaugurated new life-saving procedure for stroke patients at Netanya’s Laniado Hospital has already been used successfully. Through this procedure the patients also return to a far better quality lifestyle than typically achieved by traditional methods.

Dr. Rodrig, Laniado’s ER director explained. ”This particular patient was diagnosed quickly and accurately on arrival as still experiencing a severe cerebral event [Stroke]. Following a short but critical multi-disciplinary discussion with the relevant Department heads, he was admitted to the Weinreb Rehabilitation Center where a new medication known as TPI was administered by our specially trained staff. Within 2 hours of the new treatment the attending doctors derived much satisfaction knowing that not only was the patient’s life saved, but that amazingly, he could already move and speak normally.”

Laniado’s Director of Neurology Dr. Shoshana Hadar elaborates further. ”Saving the life of cerebral event victims through the use of this new treatment is possible if the patient is brought in within four and a half hours of the event. We know cerebral events are caused by two reasons; a blood flow that is caused by a torn blood vessel or an artery blockage that prevents flow to the brain. Both events can cause paralysis and coma. The innovative treatment of TPI that is injected intravenously is designed to minimize complications to the brain.”

The treatment necessitates an infrastructure that is available 24 hours. The system includes a CT scanner, neurology department, an assigned trained nursing and emergency staff, in addition to X-ray and laboratory availability. Since the treatment must be fast, decisions have to be made immediately as every moment is critical.

”This new treatment allows patients in these circumstances to eventually function much better than ever before,” proudly adds Dr. Skolnick, the medical director of Laniado.
